Syrian Refugee Family Sponsorship
The United Church of Canada is deeply concerned for the more than 6 million people who are now internal or external refugees, displaced by the fighting in Syria. As the numbers of refugees increase, the United Church has been asked to help. On September 5, 2013, the church launched an emergency appeal for donations that will be directed to our partners on the ground.
Our Presbytery agreed to bring a Syrian Refugee Family of four to Seaway Valley. In November, we learned about the family we are sponsoring. Joyce is 4 and George is 6. Their mother is an English teacher and their father has worked in construction. They lived in the city of Zabadani, a city of about 26,000 in the southwest of Syria, near Damascus. When a Christian church near their home was destroyed, their home, along with several others, was destroyed also. We are so pleased to help their family to come to safety in Canada and to be united with family here.
Congregations throughout our Presbytery are encouraged to raise funds to sponsor our refugee family. All of the money will go to one spot. We thank Williamsburg United Church for accepting this responsibility as part of their involvement in our sponsorship project.
